The unique characteristic of Rutube is that it is able to publish the content of other Gazprom-Media assets, such as the programs of the television channels TNT, TV-3, Friday!, 2x2, Match TV, Red Media's special-interest channels or the projects of the Central Partnership. Rutube also partners with the largest Russian rights holders and producers of television and film content, notably the film companies Bazelevs and Leopolis, Mosfilm and Soyuzmultfilm studios, Sreda production company, and the television channels REN-TV and etc.

Rutube is primarily oriented at Russian audiences. Given its modern, high-quality content, the Rutube portal is a major draw for young people. In 2014, 59% of the resource's users were under the age of 34. Overall, the online service is a top choice among educated audiences: 61% of Rutube's users have post-graduate education.

Rutube places only licenced contents on its portal and has the moderator service in place, which resolves conflict situations and responds to the concerns of authors and rights holders. The Rutube developed a system for protecting the licenced content protection called Rutube Match. This system creates a digital fingerprint of the videos uploaded to Rutube by rights holders and scans the site's content for pirated copies.

The Rutube portal was launched in 2006 and became a part of Gazprom-Media in 2008.
